How Electric Advisors' Customized Solutions Helped a Growing Café Group Save

A small group saves big with Electric Advisors

In May of 2023, EA was contacted by the owner of a small group of cafés located in the greater Washington, DC area. The owner was interested in pricing natural gas and electricity supply for each of their five locations. An advisor spoke with the client and informed them of certain limitations that the state of Virginia has imposed on the open energy market which only allow the largest of commercial customers to purchase their electricity from an alternate supplier. After assuring the client that Electric Advisors could still help them find better natural gas pricing for their Virginia store, the advisor proceeded with examining the company’s bills and evaluating their energy needs.

After the advisor had established an understanding of the client’s usage patterns and energy needs, Electric Advisors collected custom pricing quotes from roughly 10 suppliers that serve the greater DC area. The prices given by these suppliers proved to be highly competitive in contrast with the prices being offered by the utility both at that time, and in the months ahead. The client ultimately signed electricity contracts at prices 23% lower than the current market rate for their Washington, DC locations, and 17% below market rate for their Maryland locations.

Due to the relatively low usage on their natural gas accounts, there were fewer suppliers to choose from for that commodity. Despite the smaller pool of options, Electric Advisors was still able to find the client a natural gas price 10.5% lower than the market rate.

All said and done, the natural gas and electricity pricing secured by Electric Advisors will help the client save an estimated $23,700 in the first year alone, and nearly $95,000 over the life of the contract.

As businesses continue their budgeting process throughout 2025, electricity supply costs across the PJM Interconnection region are rising, driven largely by an increase in capacity charges. Capacity charges, which ensure enough power is available during peak demand, have seen a sharp uptick, leading to higher rates, especially in the DC and Maryland energy markets. Both residential and commercial customers are facing these increases, with supply prices potentially rising by as much as 20%, significantly impacting operational costs across Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Baltimore County, Ann Arundel County and towns all across the east coast. However, there is still time to mitigate the coming increase in supply rates. From simple energy efficiency upgrades, such as LED lighting or smart thermostats, to longer-term projects like solar panel installations and power walls, businesses have a range of commercial energy solutions to reduce consumption and control costs. These procurement strategies can offer significant business energy savings over time and position companies for more sustainable energy use. We encourage you to talk with business owners and decision-makers in your network about these rising costs. This is a great time to introduce them to Electric Advisors , where we can help them navigate these changes and find ways to reduce their energy expenses.
